UK Interior Minister Suella Braverman dismissed following her allegations of political bias against London police.
Following a tumultuous weekend of marches and protests in London, Rishi Sunak, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, has dismissed Suella Braverman from her role as Home Secretary.
The responsibilities of the home secretary's office encompass law enforcement in England and Wales. On November 8, in an opinion piece published in The Times of London, Braverman, in reference to the "pro-Palestine movement," expressed concern that "hate marchers" might exploit November 11, Armistice Day, to "parade through London in yet another show of strength." Armistice Day, also recognized as Remembrance Day in the Commonwealth and Veterans Day in the U.S., is an annual commemoration of the armistice signed between the Allies of World War I and Germany.
Regrettably, there is a perception that senior police officers show favoritism when dealing with protesters. In the era of COVID-19, inquiries arise Why were lockdown dissenters not tolerated by public order police, while Black Lives Matter demonstrators not only received permission but were allowed to disregard regulations? and some officers even kneeled in support? Right-wing and nationalist protesters facing aggression rightfully encountered a stern response, yet pro-Palestinian groups engaging in almost identical behavior often go unnoticed, even when clearly violating the law. I have conversed with both current and former police officers who have observed and raised concerns about this apparent double standard," Braverman stated.
"Football enthusiasts express a heightened dissatisfaction with the stringent policing they face compared to politically-connected minority groups favored by the left. Senior officers seem to prioritize avoiding potential criticism over addressing the possible alienation of the majority resulting from perceived inequities. The government has an obligation to adopt a more comprehensive perspective," Braverman emphasized.
On the Saturday preceding Remembrance Day, right-wing protesters and football hooligans clashed with the Metropolitan Police at the Cenotaph in London, the site where Remembrance Day is observed. Approximately 120 individuals were arrested, and multiple police officers sustained injuries. Subsequently, a peace march ensued, marked by instances of antisemitism. These events led to calls from the opposition for Braverman to step down.

The day following these incidents, Braverman posted on Twitter: "Our courageous police officers deserve the gratitude of every upstanding citizen for their professionalism in the face of violence and aggression from protesters and counter-protesters in London yesterday. The fact that multiple officers were injured while fulfilling their duties is unacceptable. The reprehensible, inflammatory, and, in some cases, clearly criminal chants, signs, and items openly displayed during the march mark a disturbing new low. The widespread presence of antisemitism and other forms of racism, along with the glorification of terrorism on such a scale, is deeply troubling. This cannot be allowed to continue. Week by week, the streets of London are being tainted by hate, violence, and antisemitism. Members of the public are facing mobs and intimidation. Particularly, Jewish individuals feel under threat. Further action is imperative."
On Monday, Braverman was dismissed from her role, marking the second occasion this has transpired. The first instance occurred during Liz Truss' brief term as prime minister, where Braverman was terminated for transmitting ministerial documents through her personal email. Sunak subsequently reinstated her six days later, following his assumption of the prime ministerial role.
Simultaneously, a cabinet reshuffle is in progress. James Cleverly, the foreign secretary, has taken over as the new home secretary, succeeding Braverman. Additionally, David Cameron, the former Prime Minister credited with initiating Brexit, has been appointed as the new foreign secretary.
