When Virat Kohli takes the field to bat, records tend to be shattered. The esteemed Indian batsman has clinched yet another world record in one-day internationals.

During the World Cup match against Sri Lanka at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium on Thursday, the former Indian skipper, Kohli, achieved the feat of scoring 1000 runs in a calendar year.

This marked the eighth occasion in Kohli's career where he reached the milestone of scoring 1000 runs in a year, surpassing the previous record set by former Indian cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar, who had achieved this feat seven times during his career.

Kohli attained the remarkable milestone of crossing 1,000 runs in the years 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2017, 2018, and 2019. In contrast, Tendulkar's impressive achievements were in 1994, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2003, and 2007.

Kohli holds a unique record of being the only batsman to have scored ten centuries against Sri Lanka in ODIs, surpassing any other batsman against a specific team in this format.

Notably, Tendulkar still maintains the record for the most runs scored in a calendar year, amassing 1894 runs in 1998.

Kohli achieved another noteworthy milestone by attaining his 118th fifty-plus score in ODI cricket, placing him on par with the esteemed Sri Lankan cricketer Kumar Sangakkara on this prestigious list.

Despite his achievements, Kohli fell short in his pursuit to match Tendulkar's world record of 49 ODI centuries, getting dismissed for 88 off 94 balls. Among ODI cricketers, only Tendulkar, with 145 fifty-plus scores, surpasses Kohli in this remarkable accomplishment.

Earlier in the match, Sri Lanka's captain, Kusal Mendis, won the toss and chose to field against the undefeated hosts, India, who have the opportunity to secure a spot in the semi-finals with a victory.

Rohit Sharma's team has lived up to their reputation as favorites for the tournament, winning all six of their round-robin matches thus far.
